A Greek geographer Strabo describes gardening in containers as enormous, hollow, earth-filled pillars that are large enough to accommodate trees. While garden centers and catalogs offer thousands of container types, shapes, colors, sizes, and materials, containers could even be made from pieces of scrap wood, wire mesh, and other discarded items.
