Crossed palms
Article Abstract:
An unusual grouping of palmettos in Brazoria County, TX, is being conserved, thanks in large part to the efforts of Landon Lockett, who received the Nancy Benedict Memorial Award from the Native Plant Society of Texas in Oct 1994. Palm specialist Robert W. Read has identified the trees as a hybrid of Sabal mexicana and S. minor, which would make them the only known naturally reproducing hybrid palms in the US. Most of the area where the palms are found has been purchased by the Nature Conservancy and will become part of the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge.

Hornet bite is bad for bark
Article Abstract:
The European hornet has a taste for the sap inside the bark of trees, which can be damaging to ornamentals. The hornets strip the bark, chew it, and drink the sap inside. In the process, they may also catch bees and other insects attracted to the sap. The behavior was thought to be linked to nest building, but entomologists and horticulturalists now say it is a form of feeding frenzy.
