The National Trust for Historic Preservation names five Southern States sites in its 1991 list of threatened US historic places. These include one of the earliest freed slaves' school in South Carolina, the Madison property in Virginia, a 1924 Tennessee post office, a Georgia vista and a Maryland battlefield park.
