On C. Vann Woodward
Article Abstract:
Respected historian C. Vann Woodward left an enduring legacy in Southern historiography. His book 'The Strange Career of Jim Crow,' published in 1955, made significant, albeit controversial, contributions to the debate on racial segregation in schools in the South. Vann Woodward argued in the book that the South's universal segregation laws, also called Jim Crow laws, dated at most only from the 1890s. His colleagues held him in high esteem for his painstaking research and independent judgment, not to mention his commitment to his profession.
