Herbaceous potentillas
Article Abstract:
There are 500 different species of potentillas and some varieties include herbaceous border perennials. Varieties that put out runners that are 10 inches to 2 feet long include p. alba, p. fragiformis, p. thurberi and p. atrosanguinea. These and other varieties are described and admired.

Invincible violas: careful breeding has endowed these favorites with new colors and an iron constitution
Article Abstract:
Violas originally had black markings spreading out from the center of the flowers, but Charles Stuart was able to breed violas without the markings in 1884. Gardeners can propagate violas by dividing them, using cuttings, growing them from seed, or using a layering technique.
