Most birds are a welcome addition to the garden or yard for not only are they colorful and pleasant to watch, but they eat more insects, often pesty ones, than any other kind of food. Tips are given on the most effective trees, shrubs and vines to plant to attract birds. Sunflowers are a favorite.

The garden in winter

Nov and Dec activities for the gardener include information on where to buy broom corn seeds and how to grow them for fall harvest of the straw. Straw broommaking is a welcome winter activity. In Dec many gardeners retreat inside, but creating a terrarium can be a rewarding indoor winter activity.
