Windows, doors and porches should be screened to keep away insects while still letting in fresh air. Aluminum is the best material for insect screening, since bronze is expensive and galvanized steel is prone to rust. Most hardware and home-center stores offer insect screening.

Ideal attic ventilation depends on a house's total net free vent area. Vents should be always kept open, no matter what the season is. To prevent insulation from blocking vents, thin plywood baffles can be installed.
