Northeast: Beware the barberry

Article Abstract:

The Japanese barberry like many invasive non-natives was welcomed in the country and was warmly embraced as a replacement for native B, vulgaris, but was later blamed for spreading cereal rust that damaged agricultural crops. Hence, cotoneaster as a low-growing, low maintenance plant is recommended as an alternative to barberry worth growing.

The problem of the primary offenders like weeds that invade the garden and the methods of transplanting are highlighted. The way in which rhizomes curled around a newly planted meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and how the problem was overcome by transplanting the plant are discussed.

Various ways of watering houseplants with watering cans and recoiling hoses are presented. In addition, different kinds of soil, pots and saucers are suggested that would help in watering houseplants in the best possible way.
