Outdoor power equipment: big-box efforts reshape the market

Article Abstract:

The entry of warehouse home center chains in the sale of outdoor power equipment (OPE) has forced many hardware dealers to stop marketing the category. The inroads the large chains have made in OPE sales were gradual. In 1978 the had only 1% of the market. This rose to 8% in 1992 and in 1996, warehouse home center chains account for 12% of the market. As the Hechingers and Home Depots gained market share, the independents lost out.

Pergament expands in NY, seeks locations further north

Article Abstract:

Pergament Home Centers has opened two new stores in the Bronx, NY, doubling the company's presence in the borough. Both stores are Express units. One of the new units, in Bruckner, features 33,000 sq ft of selling area and a 1,000-car rooftop parking lot. The store has new merchandising displays for lumber and power tools. Both new stores' security measures are more extensive than those in some other Pergament stores.
