Outer sanctums
Article Abstract:
The Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA, and the Central Church of Christ in Del Rio, TX, have each developed gardens to educate their communities and add beauty to their environments. The Texas church garden is filled with native species that grew spontaneously on the land, supplemented by other native plants. The Virginian garden is meant to demonstrate ways of caring for the environment, and the use of herbicides has moved a proposed wildflower meadow closer to reality. The garden also includes native woodlands.

A ranch retreat
Article Abstract:
The Chapman Ranch School in Southern California offers nature programs in a mountainous setting. Located near the Angeles National Forest, the curriculum is designed to bring nature into the classroom. Children and teachers can visit the ranch, and in-services are offered to teachers. Schools can work with the ranch over a three-year period to develop a their own program to teach the arts and sciences. One of the main purposes of the school is to show children natural cycles and allow them to learn from the earth.

Philadelphia cream
Article Abstract:
The PA Horticultural Society's 1994 City Gardens Contest winners used imagination to make up for limited time and money in their entries. Dennis McGlade had the advantage of being a landscape architect in designing his rooftop garden, built on 400 sq ft of decking on a sloping roof. He had to take special care because of a drying wind. Tom and Jill Cohen were novices in 1992 when they fenced in a 750-sq-ft area by their townhouse, turning it into the quintessential city garden with both produce and ornamentals.
