The prices of antiques sold at auction prices do not necessarily reflect their real market prices and are often influenced by media publicity and a number of factors. Prices can be increased by competitive bidders, the rarity of the piece, and location of the auction.

Issues concerning the charges made on buyers and sellers at Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses and allegations of price fixing are discussed. From February 2000 the buyer's penalty is raised to 17.5% at Christie's.
