Sears tests Orchard concept in Ohio

Article Abstract:

A Sears Hardware unit near Columbus, OH has reopened as an Orchard Complete Hardware and Garden prototype unit. Sears expects to change nine other Sears Hardware stores into Orchard units. While the revamped units will continue to carry Sears brands, Orchard-specific lines have been added to their product mix. Sears official Tim Conway says that the company embraced the Orchard concept because of the respect it enjoys in the industry and in California.

The 120-store Sears Hardware successfully competes with home center store chains and independent hardware stores in major markets. District managers coordinate Sears Hardware's operations, and meet customers' requests for items the hardware store chain does not carry. Sears plans to increase its promotional activity for its hardware store division, and open 100 new stores annually between 1996-2005.
