Elizabeth Vining
Article Abstract:
Elizabeth Vining was a tutor to the Japanese royal family, and she became the tutor of the elder son of the emperor, Prince Akihito, when he was 12-years-old, in 1946. She did not speak Japanese and had not been to Japan before she was appointed to the post. She was a childless widow who was selected by the US for the role. She promoted ideas of individualism in Akihito, who later became emperor, and whose views are said to be more liberal than much of the Japanese population.
