Student rating biases: are faculty fears justified?
Article Abstract:
Student evaluation of teacher effectiveness provides information for administrations, teachers, students, and researchers alike, but there are fears among many faculty members that this assessment method is often biased. They feel that student ratings are influenced by such extraneous variables as class size, instructor popularity, grading leniency, and course difficulty. The statistical impact of these variables on student ratings was studied and was found to be relatively insignificant. There is no reason why student ratings cannot be used for diagnostic purposes, for decisions regarding tenure merit and promotion, and as part of the process of evaluating teacher effectiveness.
