Caesalpinias belong to the pea family and grow in warm climates. They do well in extreme heat and can tolerate alkaline soils and drought. Gardeners prize their showy, exotic flowers. Several varieties are discussed including 'red bird of paradise' and 'yellow bird of paradise.'

Many shrubs only bloom a few weeks per year, but there are several notable exceptions that bloom for several weeks or months. Winter heath and winter jasmine are both good choices, as a number of summer and fall bloomers such as Caucasian daphne and littleleaf lilac.
