The textile art exhibition held at the Center for Contemporary Arts in St. Louis Missouri from September to October 1997 showcased the advancements made in fiber in the last decade. New techniques include the use of fiber-reactive dyes, lye baths, vat dyes, and dye removal methods.

Japanese textile artists since roughly 1989 have fashioned a reputation for themselves with their experimental designs. The innovative works of some of these artists at St. Louis Art Museum's exhibit challenge many preconceived notions about the contemporary Japanese art world.
