Laundress Oseola McCarty is recognized for her amazing desire to aid needy students. McCarthy has endorsed majority of her savings the University of Southern Mississippi and when she dies, roughly $150,000 will be provided as scholarship grants to needy students.

Clyda S. Rent and Johnnetta B. Cole are considered women champions of higher learning in the Southern States. Cole worked as a president of a college for black women while Rent pushed for women studies as the first female university president in Mississippi.
