Rustic furniture has attracted revived interest owing to environmental issues. The interest in rustic furniture originated in England as early as 1754 while landscape designer Andrew Jackson Downing introduced Americans to the rustic look in mid-19th century.

The art of papermaking progressed westward through Central Asia and Persia and by the 14th century, there were paper mills in several parts of Europe. Different paper cutting art forms like sherenschitte of Germany were evolved and revived.
