Nick Nickou has mastered the art of growing plants that defy growing zones in his southern Connecticut garden. His specialties, rhododendrons and the Ericaceae family of shrubs, thrive because of their placement in the garden. He knows that winter sun is harmful to certain tender plants.

Bowers of glory
Article Abstract:
Clerodendrums grow big flowers in bright colors that are appealing to many gardeners. Commonly known as 'bleeding hearts,' they also bring color to a garden in the fall when most other flowers are gone. They are warm climate plants and require little care and prefer drier soil.

Gesneriads

The gesneriad family, or Gesneriaceae, has its most famous member in saintpaulias. However, other members of the family can be equally impressive, such as the aeschynanthus, columneas and the espiscias, among others. Gesneriads can bloom into tubes, guppies or even dragons.
