The economics of intergenerational community care
Article Abstract:
An experimental facility to provide care for children and the aged was established to determine the profitability of intergenerational care centers. A house was renovated to include a child care center and six rooms were set aside for elderly residents. While profitability was dependent upon rate of occupancy, a facility with six residents, six day care elders and fourteen day care children was found to generate annual net profits up to $131,000. The need for dependent care is growing as the life span is extended and more mothers work outside the home. An intergenerational facility can provide services for both needs.
