A guide to companion planting
Article Abstract:
Twenty vegetables are listed along with the plants with which they are thought to share companion qualities. Plant tomatoes near asparagus, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, onions, peppers and marigolds, but not near corn or potatoes. A listing of shade-tolerant plants is also provided.

Garden diversity can be beneficial if the plants selected are companions. Some plants repel pests, others attract beneficial insects so that all benefit. But some plants do not grow well together. They may compete for the same nutrients, increase shade, or secrete harmful chemicals.
