The weeds of Halloween
Article Abstract:
Property owners should be aware that invasive weeds are harmful to native plants and destructive to habitats. Conservationists claim invasive weeds have damaged more habitat than development. Non-native plants or invasive weeds follow a growth pattern opposite the native plants and overcome habitats either before or after the native plants are in season. Greater effort must be spent to make individuals aware of the potential harm and destroy non-native weeds when they first appear.

Just add water
Article Abstract:
One remedy to the increasing scarcity of natural wetlands is to create a bog in a yard or surrounding lot. The biggest challenges are providing adequate irrigation and appropriate flora. If successful, the homemade bog can serve as home to a variety of water-loving plants, animals, and insects. As riparian areas disappear and wetland protections remain minimal, carefully created bogs can offer a valuable environmental service.

Ellen's lot: an aunt with an agenda tries to coax nature back to a sterile development
Article Abstract:
An aunt helps her niece design and create a more natural landscape for her bare and harshly stripped suburban lot. Careful planning, extensive irrigation, and use of indigenous plant life help turn an unattractive and sterile lot into a reflection of the nearby ecosystem. Friends and neighbors are inspired by the new creation filled with birch trees, a shortgrass meadow, and fruiting thickets.
