The use of pictures of hot air balloons to decorate pieces such as snuffboxes, fans and ceramics made from the end of the eighteenth century is described, with focus on the attraction of balloons through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

A history of Welsh lovespoons and their current status as collectors items is presented. Lovespoons bearing symbolic decorations intricately carved from wood were originally presented as tokens of love to mark the beginning of courtship.
