Using leaves to improve your soil

Article Abstract:

Leaf mold produced by decaying leaves is rich in soil-building humus. This loose textured soil absorbs rainwater and makes excellent growing soil. Tips are given on shredding and mixing fallen leaves into the soil. Unshredded leaves can be used as organic mulch. Spreading before the rains is best.

Apple of my eye: crabapple trees decorate the winter landscape

Article Abstract:

Crabapple trees in Vermont add color to the winter scene and also produce fruit which can be made into jellies. There are varieties to suit almost any taste. Sterile cultivars are available which would eliminates messy fruit fall over driveways. Suggestions on planting and pruning are given.
