Vertical evergreens are strong columnar plants, which take up less space then their more expansive counterparts, and are particularly useful as design elements in small gardens. They are strong, year-round design elements for a garden and it is crucial to carefully select those that thrive and stay healthy in a particular garden's microclimate.

The black cohosh (cimicifuga racemosa) is a better herbal alternative than hormone replacement therapy (HRT) offered to post-menopausal women. The whole extract of black cohosh is found to be safe for women who are concerned about an increased risk of breast or uterine cancer.
