Arabian frontiers and Anglo-American relations
Article Abstract:
A divergence of ends created conflict between British and American diplomacy toward Saudi Arabia. The American effort was a prudential one, aimed at avoiding armed conflict with the Soviets in the region. Britain's diplomacy was motivated rather by principle, the British Foreign Office being appalled by the piracy of the Saudis toward their neighbors. The Arabian American Oil Company used its influence in the US State Department to foster US-UK animosity, in order to protect its oil rights from British encroachment.
