Article Abstract:
Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the New World where the first colonists stepped onto Jamestown Island about four hundred years ago. When they arrived sea-lanes had already been mapped for a century, intercontinental trade was a regular thing and the American east coast was swarming with fisherman and slave-traders from the breadth of Europe and Jamestown survived, grew, and metastasized in the first of the major roots of the American nation.
