Conventional stores reclaim sales growth title in 1997

The largest conventional furniture stores in the US sold $11 billion worth of furniture, bedding and accessories in 1997, up 12.7% from 1996. The sales growth was higher than the 9.1% posted by the specialty store segment and the 11.9% increase reported by the entire Top 100 stores. The figures represent a reversal of fortunes as specialty stores was ahead of conventional stores in 1996 in terms of sales growth. However, specialty stores led conventional stores in 1997 in terms of unit growth. The number of specialty stores grew 5.7% in 1997, compared with 3.3% for conventional stores.

Gallery, Rockaway retain titles as top performance champions

Gallery Furniture and Rockaway Bedding are the leading US furniture stores in terms of sales per square foot and inventory turns, respectively, in Furniture Today's list of Top 100 furniture retailers in 1997. Gallery Furniture had 1997 sales per square foot of $1,955, compared with $1,875 in 1996. Rockaway Bedding turned its stock an average of 40 times in 1997, compared with second-ranked Gallery's 38 times. Overall, Gallery Furniture was ranked number 38 in the Top 100 list, while Rockaway Bedding was number 55.
