Furniture key category in Ward turn-around
Article Abstract:
Montgomery Ward is test-marketing a new strategy to emerge from bankruptcy. Within store in Bloomingdale, Ill., Towson MD., and Las Vegas, NV. the company is emphasizing women's ready to wear clothing, and furniture. The main emphasis appears to be in furniture, with four styles. The styles are Mission, casual oak, country pine, and traditional cherry. Pricing will still be in the range of $399 to $499, but with some furniture ranging up to $999 for leather items, and dining rooms ranging about $1,400.. La-Z-Boy will still be included, but less recliners will be offered. The goal is to upgrade the merchandise. As part of that goal, a new marketing campaign began titled "We're Changing Everything to Change Your Mind." This includes removing the discount store aspect from the company. A key element of this new approach is increased customer services. Ward's furniture sales for 1997 were down 11.8% from 1996, and 1998 sales seem to show the same trend.
