Italy's GieMme stepping up U.S. sales efforts

Francesco Molon/GieMme, a Romano D'Ezzelino, Italy-based furniture maker, blessed its new 25,000-sq-ft showroom building worth $2 million on North Hamilton Street in High Point, NC. The new facility will also serve as its permanent showroom and US sales office. As part of efforts to promote US sales, the company is also hiring sales representatives nationwide. The company's initial thrust will focus on the west since its present sales efforts are largely focused in the Northeast. The company's furniture, produced from its factory complex in northeast Italy near Trieste, are sold mostly in upscale furniture stores and design showrooms.

U.S. producers gain foothold in China

A modicum of US furniture manufacturers are securing a foothold in the huge Chinese market due to several showroom launches in mainland China in 1998. American Home Furnishings Gallery, a 3,000-sq-ft showroom dedicated to US-made furniture that target middle- to upper-class customers such as the expatriate community, opened in northern China. The showroom's roster of suppliers that were lined by California Furniture Exports, include Fairchild of California, Stanley Furniture, Best Chairs and Woodard.
