John Kelly allies with Singapore's Fowseng

John Kelly Furniture Design of New York City, NY, has entered a partnership with Fowseng of Singapore that will shift manufacturing to Malaysia from West Virginia, a move that will reduce its manufacturing cost by about 40%. John Kelly, which has renewed its participation at the High Point, NC, market in 1998, said that the new prices will make it competitive with the other firms showing their wares at High Point. Fowseng, which has both manufacturing and retail operations in Malaysia and Singapore, will make medium to high-end furnitures for John Kelly.

FBI's growth strategy
Article Abstract:
Furniture Brands International (FBI) intends to strengthen its market share through strategic alliances such as the one it entered with Havertys to use its notable brand name clout in advertising. FBI Chairman and CEO Mickey Holliman, cited the move part of the firm's growth strategy during the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn.'s marketing division meeeting. The US furniture maker is also expected to launch consolidation efforts for volume purchasing and offshore sourcing activities among its companies, such as Thomasville, Lane and Broyhill.
