Quincy's quarries

Article Abstract:

West Quincy, MA, was an important source of granite in the 19th century. Granite from the area was used to build Fort Warren and Fort Independence in Boston Harbor, King's Chapel in Boston, the Minot lighthouse, and various customs houses in leading US cities. About 60 abandoned quarries can be found in West Quincy.

The involvement of Robert Bennet Forbes into the shipping trade with China left an indelible mark in his life. While in China he became a protege of Chinese merchant Houqua. However, the opium trade cut the friendly relations of China with the western world which ended Forbes' career in the country.

The garden at the Adams house

One of the most famous historical sites in Quincy, MA, is the estate belonging to the family of former Pres John Quincy Adams. The estate boasts of a garden that consists of special plants reflecting each generation of the Adamses.
