Stanley sticks to wood
Article Abstract:
Stanley Furniture announced in the first week of August 1998, that it will drop its upholstery line to focus on opportunities in its core wood business. The company's plans call for the closure of its upholstery manufacturing in Lexington, NC, within 60 days. For the first six months of 1998, upholstery accounted for 3%, or approximately $3.6 million, of the sales of Stanley, while its core wood business increased 20% in 1998. The closure of the company's Lexington facility will affect 70 workers. Stanley Chairman, President and CEO Albert Prillaman noted that the affected workers will be provided outplacement assistance.
