The wounds of war
Article Abstract:
Continuous warfare from 1945 to 1975 caused extensive damage to Vietnam's environment. Seventy-two million liters of herbicides sprayed by US forces on forests and croplands destroyed around 22, 000 square kilometers of tropical forests and agricultural lands. However, concerted efforts by Vietnamese scientists to return the environment to its original state are gaining ground. The reforestation program initiated by the government as early as 1959 has resulted in about 5.7 million hectares of land planted with trees. This is continually bringing about the return of Vietnam's wildlife to their natural habitats.
