The house built by timber magnate Thomas Ruggles in the early 19th century in Columbia Falls, MN, has been restored to its former glory. It features elaborate yet delicate woodwork done by woodcarver Alvah Petersen, who came with housewright Aaron Sherman from Massachusetts to work on the house.

Restoring old houses requires a knowledge of early construction practices. How each piece relates to others is critical in reconstructing the whole structure. Eighteenth and 19th century clapboards, moldings, and wainscoting and paneling are described for a glimpse of early building practices.
