21st century unions
Article Abstract:
'The future of trade unions,' a report published by the House of Commons Employment Committee, reveals the Committee's division on the issue of labor union recognition and agreement on several other issues. The committee has recommended that trade unions should actively seek new members and provide new services to demonstrate the value of union membership. Employers are advised to cooperate with unions and involve union members in management changes. The future of trade unions in the United Kingdom will be influenced by EC policies and legislation.

Banking in the 21st Century
Article Abstract:
Banking jobs will decrease dramatically by 2006, according to an international research report. The report's estimate of 50% workforce reductions appears to be borne out by layoffs and branch closings announced by NatWest Bank, Lloyds, Barclays, and the Bank of England. The report recommends banks concentrate on market focus, resources, processes, and structure. Overall, the banking industry must focus on technological innovation, restructuring, re-skilling employees, improved products, and customer service.

Trade unions on trial
Article Abstract:
The UK's Commissioner for the Rights of Trade Union Members or CROTUM is designed to assist union members in pursuing grievances against their unions. Since its creation in 1988, CROTUM has handled 3,311 inquiries and 382 formal applications. Complaints concern alleged breaches of union rules, particularly in elections or disciplinary actions. CROTUM refuses to back over 50% of the applications, but assists about 10% of the annual applications, successfully resolving about 20% of them.
