A decrease in employee sick days is only one bonus from Sunseeds' wellness program. Morale at the company also has increased considerably
Article Abstract:
Sunseeds Co personnel manager Michael Troiano was the driving force behind the company's implementation of an employee wellness program that has successfully reduced the number of employee sick days and boosted employee morale. Troiano was initially opposed by senior management and took the initiative of establishing a cholesterol screening program on his own. The program impressed the CEO, who was revealed to have a high cholesterol level. The CEO thereafter supported Troiano, who subsequently has scheduled various employee health events, including: lunch-time seminars on preventing back pain; on-site hypertension screening; and seminars on nutrition. The wellness program has increased employees' awareness of health and safety and fostered positive competition amongst employees to become healthier.

Build wellness from an EAP base
Article Abstract:
Companies should base their wellness programs on an employee assistance program (EAP). Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp improved employees' health and reduced the costs of employee benefits by integrating a wellness program with an EAP. The integrated program was based on several facts, including that the EAP had a proven record of success, the EAP had credibility, and the concept of wellness was compatible with the role of the EAP. The reasons for establishing an EAP program include that the Employee Retirement Income Security Act includes EAP programs under the definition of employee benefits, and wellness programs may be taxable and create financial liability.

Can you spot a peak performer?
Article Abstract:
Employees who become successful have several common characteristics, and employers should learn how to identify these employees during the hiring process. Peak performers are those employees who are committed to improving the way in which their firms conduct business. Employers can identify peak performers during the hiring process by asking job candidates about three events that made them proud and the lessons they learned from those experiences, and by asking about three setbacks and how job candidates handled those setbacks.
