A good start
Article Abstract:
Many UK companies have traditionally not regarded health and safety as a vital element of Total Quality Management, according to the Health and Safety Executive. However, it is now becoming widely recognized that paying more attention to environmental and health and safety issues can significantly boost a company's overall performance. Against this background, benchmarking is beginning to be applied in the health and safety sector. Formalized health and safety benchmarking systems are starting to be established, but more work still needs to be done to encourage small companies.

A day in the life of a safety adviser
Article Abstract:
Keeping the workplace in a clean and tidy site plays a key role in avoiding accidents, according to construction site safety adviser Andrew Farrer. Managers and employees are now generally better informed about safety issues than they were in the past, but the fact that the workforce tends to be very transitional still creates difficulties. Health and safety legislation is now often experience-driven, and new, safer systems are constantly being developed.

Prison officers or gaolers, who cares?
Article Abstract:
The UK Prison Service is suffering from low staff morale and cash shortages, with occupational health and safety issues generally low on the management's agenda. The Prison Officers' Assn believes that employees will continue to suffer from low support until the Prison Service provides full occupational health and safety service. In some cases, prison officers receive less support than the inmates they guard.
