Economists and data
Article Abstract:
Economists need to select particular theories from various alternatives, and data provide the major criterion for selection. The alternative to selection, accepting a pluralism of methods is less appropriate. Testing of data through replication has an important role in economics, just as it has in natural sciences. It is possible to draw analogies with issues in physics, medical science, and history, and today's economists often pay too little attention to history.
