The kind of competence for rapid change
Article Abstract:
NatWest Investment Bank Ltd (UK) management has been analyzing research on high-performance managerial behavior and environmental change because NatWest believes a dynamic environment will play an important role in identifying behaviors that lead to excellent job performance. Eleven high-performance managerial competencies, including conceptual flexibility, interaction management and achievement orientation were defined by University of South Florida management professor Harry Schroder. The research findings have been tested at NatWest, and an additional research project on achievement motivation will be initiated in January 1990 by the London Business School. Studying managerial competence gives a high payback on a company's financial and time investment and answers questions about the challenges of present and future changes.

Nick Barton, special agent of change
Article Abstract:
Nick Barton is headmaster of a boys' preparatory school called Newlands in Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Barton was selected to run the school in 1976 when enrollment was critically low and falling. Barton enacted an organizational development program which included these elements: assessing the circumstances, developing a mission, planning and implementing tactics, and reviewing progress. Emphasis is the tactics stage was on regaining customers for the school; planning for staffing; organizational culture and structure; and pay and conditions. An employee appraisal plan was also initiated. Newlands is now seen as one of northeast England's major preparatory schools, with a sustained record in both academics and sports.
