Benefits management beyond the adding machine: using integrated, worker-specific analysis

Article Abstract:

Needless reliance on 'adding machine' approaches to health care benefits management has undermined the advantages that modern information technology offers to improve today's employee benefits practices. Instead of depending on these traditional approaches, including the 'biomedical' and the 'insurance' models, benefits management can be enhanced by utilizing the 'integrated worker-specific' model. A comparative study of all these models, with emphasis on the Pareto effect on benefits consumption, suggests that human resource and risk management practices may significantly bear on worker benefits costs.
