Brave new world
Article Abstract:
New technology has played a significant role in boosting productivity, but has had a negative impact on many production line workers. Such workers feel that they lack control over their working environment, and this can make them more vulnerable to accidents and lead to a decline in quality. Technology can also have a negative impact on employees in call centres, who are constantly monitored and come under strong pressure to reach specific targets. New technology may force employees into unsuitable piece-work arrangements, and could encourage poor posture and frequent repetitive movements.

Whither SHE
Article Abstract:
Corporate governance affects how health and safety issues are dealt with. Some controls over how companies managed their affairs have been removed and this has allowed the Maxwell, BCCI and Bearing scandals to occur, while the King's Cross fire is an example of poor safety measures being implemented. Internal controls, such as looking at the environment, communication, monitoring, identifying risks and corrective action, have to be set in place. Employers have to take health and safety seriously.

This may come as a shock to you
Article Abstract:
Electricity can cause death through shocks or burns, so risks have to be managed by employers. Temporary electricity supplies are as dangerous as permanent supplies and may be less protected from damage as they are often used during construction work. Accidents may occur through inexperience, and also when employees have considerable experience and make erroneous assumptions as to the safety of equipment without carrying out the necessary checks.
