Career development gets a charge at Sears Credit
Article Abstract:
Sears Credit introduced a career-development program after going through a radical organizational transformation. The company realized that it was important to help employees plan their career particularly in the aftermath of massive organizational changes, which in its case reduced the workforce by 3,000 heads. For the career-development initative, a team was formed led by the training and development manager, and the career directions manager. With the support of top management, the team defined skills and competencies required to succeed within the reorganized jobs, developed manager/peer assessment and self-assessment inventories, planned training for career planning and devised a new compensation program. It also made sure that there was consistent communication to help employees stay informed about career issues that may affect them. The participation of Sears Credit employees in the program is a sign of the success of the career development project.

Take charge: be an intrapreneur
Article Abstract:
Human resources (HR) professionals must stop viewing themselves as expensive burdens to their companies and begin to act as intrapreneurs who are revenue producing and profit making assets to their firms. HR professionals can begin to act as intrapreneurs by identifying and quantifying the revenue produced by HR programs. The steps HR professionals can take to identify and quantify the revenue from HR programs include: calculating net income per employee from profit and loss statements; reducing the time required to fill a requisition for a position shown to generate a profit; and demonstrating the impact of training on reduced turnover.
