Designing stock option programs for emerging markets
Article Abstract:
The process of and difficulties involved in designing stock-option programs in emerging markets, particularly in Mexico and Latin America, are described. Stock-option programs offer the following advantages: they keep the interests of managers in line with stockholders, overemphasis on short-term results can be avoided, and more leverage is built into the compensation package. Difficulties in implementing such a program in developing countries include cultural barriers and executive ignorance of the mechanics and benefits of such plans.

Variable pay
Article Abstract:
The UK government decided to implement a variable pay/profit-related pay scheme in line with its efforts to reduce inflation. The scheme was designed to make the pay system more flexible by eliminating the interplay between increasing wages and prices. Variable pay has enjoyed some measure of success for several organizations but not all its claimed beneficial effects can yet be proved.
