EU countries tackle health and safety issues in Euro Week
Article Abstract:
The UK Health and Safety Executive used European Week, held in Oct 1996, to highlight carcinogens and dermatitis. More than 10,000 organisations took part in the Week, and there were a wide range of local activities, including health and safety workshops. More generally, European Week played a key role in assisting small and medium-sized companies in setting up health and safety policies. In Spain and Portugal, for example, considerable attention will now be given to improvement and inspection of working conditions.

Upwardly mobile safety
Article Abstract:
Swedish commercial truck manufacturer Scania has included a wide range of safety features in its new 4-series of heavy transport vehicles. This represents a response to the growing trend towards commercial trucks to be used almost as mobile offices. The company has developed a new electronic brake system for heavy trucks, and has also designed the front bumper of its new heavy vehicle to act as a collapsible underrun protection at the height of the bumper of a passenger car.
