Employment equity, human resource development and institution building in South Africa

Article Abstract:

South Africa is undergoing a program of reconstruction which involves labor unions, companies and the public sector. Research carried out by the Universiy of Cape Town has involved setting up a database of around a million employees and permits benchmarking of practices such as affirmative action. The rate of progress toward affirmative action is a major indicator which reveals more than actual employee composition. Monitoring is needed in order to make human resource management accountable and the project permits monitoring to be carried out.

Flexible work practices and human resource management: a comparison of South African and foreign owned companies

Article Abstract:

The flexible working practices in foreign-owned companies and South African companies are compared using data from a 1996 study. It is found that local companies use fewer flexible working practices than foreign-owned companies, particularly in the use of temporary employees and contractors. Foreign-owned companies generally have lower labor costs than their South African counterparts, which make fewer joint decisions with unions when working practices are changed.
