Engineering change
Article Abstract:
A 1997 survey of 25 UK engineering firms indicates 60% have restructured since 1991-1992 in order to improve their products, services, and productivity. Techniques such as cellular manufacturing, teamworking, total quality management, and continuous improvement have been introduced as ways of increasing quality. Similarly, pay systems, employee appraisal methods, and working hours have been revamped by many employers. Most of the unions have accepted the changes, despite the layoffs that have resulted. Many employers plan other organizational changes by 1999.
