Few employers provide direct childcare help
Article Abstract:
A study conducted by the Policy Studies Institute, 'Family-friendly working arrangements in Britain - 1996,' shows that only 10% of employers offered direct practical assistance with childcare. Direct assistance refers to day care at the workplace and childcare vouchers. Special leave to deal with child related issues is offered by many employers and this takes the overall figure of family-friendly workplaces to 77%. Improved employee morale and good employee relations is the reason 50% of employers have flexible work arrangements for dealing with childcare issues.

What do employers' associations offer to members?
Article Abstract:
Multi-employer bargaining over pay and conditions was historically the most important function of employers' associations but in recent years, the emphasis has changed to reflect the increasing flexibility and decentralization and the decline in multi-employer bargaining. A survey of 43 employers' associations was conducted in 1998 and most respondents identified the saved management time in employee-management negotiations to be the prime advantage and most associations represented members' interests collectively on employment, trade, and commercial issues.

Employers should offer disability leave, says report
Article Abstract:
The British Disability Leave pilot team thinks that British employers should offer this benefit and that it would be a way of keeping valued employees, saving on medical retirement pensions and observing the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Policies should include having outside evaluation if it looks like employees will be too disabled to keep working and employers should be willing to comply with the evaluation.
