Good housekeeping: it may be the dramatic incidents that grab the headlines but the main cause of major injuries at work is the much more mundane problem of slips and trips
Article Abstract:
Slips and trips represent more than a third of major injuries at a cost to employers of 300 million pounds sterling a year in insurance, compensation, administration and production costs. The HSE has issued guidance for employers and is currently concentrating on the food industry which has a higher overall injury rate than the average in manufacturing as a whole. The guidance offers advice in preventing slips and trips such as keeping walkways clear, inspecting floor coverings and changing the production method. Two case studies are provided and the use of personal protective equipment is reviewed.

Pesticides: the human predicament
Article Abstract:
People who feel their health has been damaged by exposure to pesticides can apply to the Benefits Agency for an industrial disablement pension, however, only one application has been successful between 1995 and 1997. Sufferers can have their case heard by the Pesticides Incidents Appraisal Panel (PIAP), but out of 82 cases of reported ill-health, none has been found to be definitely caused by pesticides, and only eight may have been. PIAP is criticised for being ineffectual. The Labour government is looking into organophosphate poisoning and this may help sufferers to claim compensation.
