Face up to the VDU directive
Article Abstract:
At the Confederation of British Industry conference on the proposed Display Screen Equipment Regulations and Guidance, British Telecom's Chief Medical Officer Dr Gwilym Hughes said the visual display unit (VDU) is an innocuous piece of furniture. There are however very great worries over the effect of VDUs in the workplace, and particularly where they are used intensively. Considerable research has indicated problems can arise and this is backed up by court awards and European directives. An agenda is needed to reduce hazards and absenteeism and increase morale and productivity.

GMB union calls for government fund to remove asbestos from buildings
Article Abstract:
GMB general secretary John Edmonds, speaking at a conference on Asbestos the Growing Challenge, has called for more resources for the Health and Safety Executive, for the safe removal of all asbestos from many public buildings, schools and libraries. Over 3,000 people died from asbestos-related diseases in 1996, and the number is expected to rise. The conference concentrated on a report into how respirators performed under real conditions, and the GMB claimed that official guidance overestimated the ability of such equipment.
